| Vandals have no respect | Cemetery’s hours may be changed
Randy Kyt, manager of the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights, has had enough. Vandals have been tearing up the cemetery at night, and Kyt is sick of it. He doesn’t want to, but if it doesn’t stop he will have to limit public access to the cemetery grounds. The alternative is to hire a security guard, which Kyt said the cemetery district cannot afford. In a statement sent to the media Monday, Kyt said, “ If this problem continues, the district will have no choice ... Read More >> |

| Things I Have Noticed ... | Gas price high? Check health costs
On Sundays several of us meet at the Airport Café for breakfast. Today one of our group, who had just spent a couple of days in the hospital for dizzyness and nausea, brought in his bill and shared the costs with us. I looked it over and immediately noticed that I could never afford to be even slightly ill and go to a Bakersfield hospital. Moreover, to go there in an ambulance would be a separate financial thrill in itself. Let me share some of the charges that this three-day st ... Read More >> |

| Let’s Go Fishing | Fish the slower water
Boyer Coursey and Bud Long really enjoyed catching this stringer of crappie. The trout bite on the Kern is still going hot and heavy. Even though the river is still running high, wide and fast, it is loaded with hungry trout. Take the time to scout out the deeper pools where the river slows. These pools are full of hungry trout and limits can be caught in no time at all.Lots of lake trout are trying to make their way to the cooler water coming in at the mouth of the Kern. More and more boats ar ... Read More >> |

| California Joe’s Country Living | Garden party at the Ghost Town

| Talking About Real Estate | Short sales are not when underwear is at a special price
This week I want to talk about another aspect of the real dstate market that is getting a lot of attention these days – Short Sales. There are a lot of Short Sales going on right now, especially in the big cities. A Short Sale is when an owner of a property is going into foreclosure and they ask the bank if they can list the property with a real estate agent for less than what they owe on the property instead of the bank foreclosing on them. This is why it’s called a "shor ... Read More >> |

| Mail Bag | Letters to the Courier
To the Kern River Courier: In Washington D.C., Congress is holding hearings to ask the public how they feel about paying fees to access public lands. These hearings will specifically include the Sequoia National Forest's proposal to impose a $10/day or $50/year fee for anyone going to the Lake, Upper Kern River, or Lloyd Meadow Road. (This is not just a camping fee, but an access fee for everyone, even those who just want to stop for a few minutes to look at the lake or river.) Your comments |
